Quote of the Week

During the Gulf War, the few opportunities I had for relaxation I always listened to music, and it brought me great peace of mind. I have shared my love of music with people throughout this world, while listening to the drums and special instruments of the Far East, Middle East, Africa, the Caribbean, and the Far North, and all of this started with the music appreciation course that I was taught in a third-grade elementary class in Princeton, New Jersey. What a tragedy it would be if we lived in a world where music was not taught to children.

Congratulations to the Symphonic Band on their Superior (I) Rating at State Adjudicated Event. Congratulations also to the Symphonic Winds for their Excellent (II) Rating at State.

Here is this week’s newsletter (PDF). Have a great week!

Quote of the Week

Music is exciting. It is thrilling to be sitting in a group of musicians playing (more or less) the same piece of music. You are part of a great, powerful, vibrant entity. And nothing beats the feeling you get when you’ve practiced a difficult section over and over and finally get it right. (Yes, even on the wood block.) Music is important. It says things your heart can’t say any other way, and in a language everyone speaks. Music crosses borders, turns smiles into frowns, and vice versa. These observations are shared with a hope: that, when schools cut back on music classes, they really think about what they’re doing – and don’t take music for granted.

The Anthony Wayne Band Boosters are in charge of the ecology duties at the Marathon Classic (formerly known as the Jamie Farr) golf tournament again this year and we need your help.

This is one of our largest fundraisers of the year. We encourage you to form a team (of 2, 4 or more people) to take care of the trash around the tees, greens, fairways and hospitality areas during the tournament. As a volunteer, you can attend the tournament for free, even when you are not working.

Band parents, students, alumni, relatives, neighbors and anyone interested in helping is welcome to volunteer. We especially welcome junior high and middle school families to volunteer: it is a great way to get involved as a booster. There are approximately 100 volunteer slots to fill.

The tournament is again at Highland Meadows in Sylvania. You can learn more at marathonclassic.com.

It takes place from July 15-21, so our ecology duties run from July 14 (setting up the Sunday before) to July 22 (tearing down the Monday after).

Sign up early to get your preferred shift! Monday through Wednesday enjoy a more relaxed atmosphere and great autograph opportunities. Once tournament play begins on Thursday, the golfers are focused on their jobs and those opportunities aren’t so frequent.

Volunteer sign up: Complete the form

Thanks in advance. Look for more information in the coming weeks.

Quote of the Week

Should we not be putting all our emphasis on reading, writing and math? The ‘back-to- basics curricula,’ while it has merit, ignores the most urgent void in our present system – absence of self-discipline. The arts, inspiring – indeed requiring – self-discipline, may be more ‘basic’ to our nation survival than traditional credit courses. Presently, we are spending 29 times more on science than on the arts, and the result so far is worldwide intellectual embarrassment.
